A worked IELTS Task 2 opinion answer arguing that homework should be limited rather than abolished, with the band shown per criterion.

The question

Some people believe that children should not be given homework because they need time to rest and play. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays many people think that children should not get homework because they need the time for rest and for play. I do not agree with this opinion completely, but I think the amount of homework should be less than now. Firstly, homework is important for children because it help them to remember what they learn in the school. In the class the teacher explain the lesson only one time, and many children forget it quickly. When they do exercises at home, they practise again and the knowledge stay in their mind. Also homework teach children to work alone without the teacher, and this is a important skill for the university and for the work later. My little brother is a good example, because he did the maths homework every day and his marks became better. On the other hand, I understand the people who say that children need free time. Children today have a very long day. They go to school in the morning, they come back in the afternoon, and then they must sit again for two or three hours with the homework. This is too much for a small child. They have no time to play with the friends or to do the sport, and playing is also important for the health and for the social skills. Some children become very stressed and they start to hate the school. In conclusion, I think homework is useful and it should not be stopped completely, but the teachers should give a smaller amount. Maybe thirty minutes for the young children and one hour for the older children is enough. In this way the children can practise the lessons and they still have the time for rest and play.

What would take this higher

To improve your Coherence and Cohesion score, you should focus on making your referencing more precise and varied. For instance, in the third paragraph, instead of repeating the pronoun 'they' and the phrase 'the homework' multiple times, you could use more varied referents such as 'these young learners' or 'this academic workload' to connect your ideas. Ensuring that every pronoun clearly points back to its specific noun will help make the progression of your arguments smoother and more sophisticated.
