IELTS Technology Essay Topics: Getting Beyond 'Technology Has Advantages'
Technology is one of the most common subjects in IELTS Writing Task 2. It is also the subject that produces the most interchangeable answers. Thousands of candidates every year write that technology has made life easier, that it saves time, and that it also has some disadvantages.
Every sentence in that paragraph is true. None of it earns a high band. The problem is not the opinion; the problem is that the same paragraph would fit a question about smartphones, about online shopping, about artificial intelligence, and about robots in factories. An answer that fits every question answers none of them.
This post shows why that happens, and what to write instead.
Why technology essays go generic
Task Response is one of the four IELTS writing criteria. The others are Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task Response asks whether you answered this question, developed your ideas, and supported them.
The public band descriptors use a specific phrase at band 6: ideas may be insufficiently developed, and examples may not be fully relevant. That is the exact shape of the generic technology answer. The candidate has ideas. The ideas are not developed into anything the reader could not have written themselves.
Technology attracts this more than other subjects for two reasons.
- The vocabulary feels available. Words like innovation, efficiency, convenience and digital era come to mind quickly, so candidates write them quickly, without checking whether they say anything.
- The subject is enormous. A question about technology could be about medicine, education, work, privacy, or transport. Candidates who do not narrow the field write about all of it, which means writing about none of it.
The specificity test
Here is a test you can run on any sentence in your own essay. Ask: could this sentence appear, unchanged, in an essay about a completely different technology question?
If yes, the sentence is not doing work.
| Sentence | Passes the test? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Technology has changed our lives in many ways. | No | Fits any question, any year, any position. |
| Modern devices bring both benefits and drawbacks. | No | This is a description of the essay, not an argument in it. |
| Video consultations allow a patient in a rural area to see a specialist without a full day of travel. | Yes | Names the technology, the user, and the benefit. |
| Automated checkouts have reduced the number of cashier jobs in large supermarkets. | Yes | Names an industry and a measurable effect. |
The two sentences that pass are not more advanced in grammar or vocabulary. They are more specific. Specificity is the scoring device.
Narrow the field before you write
Most technology questions do not ask about technology in general. They ask about technology in one area of life. Read the question again and underline the area.
- Some people think that computers should replace teachers in the classroom. The area is education.
- Many people now shop online rather than in physical stores. The area is retail and cities.
- Modern communication technology has made people less social. The area is relationships.
Once the area is fixed, your examples come from that area only. An essay about computers replacing teachers should not drift into online shopping. That drift is what examiners see as an answer that is not fully focused.
The four sub-topics that carry real content
When you need concrete material fast, these four give you something to say about almost any technology question. Learn one specific fact or observation in each.
| Sub-topic | The specific thing to say |
|---|---|
| Work | Automation removes routine tasks first, such as data entry and checkout scanning, while creating demand for people who maintain the systems. |
| Education | Software can mark and repeat, but it cannot notice that a quiet student has stopped understanding. |
| Health | Remote appointments remove travel time, which matters most for people far from a hospital. |
| Privacy | Free services are paid for with personal data, and most users have not read what they agreed to. |
None of these needs a statistic. Notice that none of them contains a number. Examples in IELTS do not have to be citable research. They have to be relevant and explained.
A before and after rewrite
Here is a body paragraph on the question Some people think computers should replace teachers in the classroom. To what extent do you agree?
Before.
Nowadays technology is developing very fast and it has many advantages for education. Computers can help students to study better and give them a lot of information. In the modern era, students can learn everything from the internet. Therefore, technology is very useful for education and society.
Four sentences, roughly forty five words of content, and no claim that could be argued with. Help students study better is not explained. A lot of information is not explained. The paragraph would fit any education question at all.
After.
Software is genuinely better than a human teacher at one narrow job, which is drilling material that must be repeated. A language application can test a student on the same fifty words every evening without becoming impatient, and it can adjust the difficulty for each learner automatically. A teacher with thirty students cannot do this. In this specific task, replacing the teacher with a program would improve the learning and free the teacher for work that only a person can do.
The second version is about the same length. It commits to one claim, names one type of software, gives one reason a teacher cannot match it, and states the consequence. It could not be moved into an essay about online shopping.
Vocabulary that carries meaning
Some technology vocabulary is precise. Some of it is filler that candidates use because it sounds academic. Learn the difference.
| Filler | What to write instead |
|---|---|
| in this digital era | today, or delete it |
| technology has advanced rapidly | name the specific advance |
| it is very convenient | say what it removes: travel, waiting, cost, effort |
| people can access unlimited information | name what they use it for |
| technology is a double-edged sword | state the benefit and the cost separately |
The right hand column is not harder English. It is more precise English, and Lexical Resource rewards precision rather than rarity.
A short worked plan
Question: Some people believe that online communication has weakened real friendships. To what extent do you agree?
Five minutes of planning should produce something like this.
- Position. Partly agree. Online communication weakens some kinds of contact and strengthens others.
- Body one. It weakens local friendship because a message is easier than an arrangement, so people substitute the cheap contact for the expensive one. Example: colleagues who message daily but have not met outside work in a year.
- Body two. It strengthens distant friendship, which used to end when people moved. Example: a friendship maintained across two countries by regular video calls, which a letter could not have sustained.
- Conclusion. The technology did not weaken friendship; it changed which friendships survive distance and which survive convenience.
That plan is specific enough to write from, and no part of it would fit a different question.
Do this today
Take the last technology essay you wrote. Run the specificity test on every sentence in your body paragraphs. Cross out every sentence that would fit a different question. Then count what is left. If less than half the paragraph survives, you have found the reason your Task Response band is stuck.
Rewrite the crossed out sentences one at a time, each time naming a specific technology, a specific group of people, and a specific effect.
If you want a second view on which of the four criteria is holding your writing back, paste the essay into Bandly for an estimated band on each criterion with the reasoning behind each estimate. The estimates come from software rather than a human examiner, so treat them as a guide to where to work rather than a prediction of your exam result.
Find out what this essay would score
Paste your own answer and Bandly returns an estimated band for each of the four criteria, with the sentences that pulled the score down. Under a cent an essay, about six seconds.
